Many of the terrifying concepts in Annihilation will make you feel more terrified then blazed. The plot may be sci-fi in nature (pun intended), but the storytelling goes deeper. Who are we? Are we part of nature or outside of it? Are we the aliens on this planet? Perhaps we don’t deserve this planet which we have abused so thoroughly? When the credits rolled, it took a moment to shake off many of these existentially troubling themes.

When you successfully mix the psychedelic with science fiction, you get the ultimate stoner film. Include Queen Amidala and Poe Dameron in the mix and the nerd legitimacy is sealed. But don’t listen to my fear mongering. Fire up that joint and let the shimmer take hold. It just might mold you into a new you.
