Mr. Farrell, Please Report to the Principal's Office. Again.
When you've been a bad boy for most of your career, it is hard to break out of that perceived role so you can be appreciated for your quality work. Mickey Rourke's career use to be a warning parable to many an actor pursing that path, but now he is popular and working again so everyone has forgotten about the very extensive list of bad gigs and terrible life decisions. I suppose the worst kind of method acting is when you find yourself unable to escape the weird curve of your own life pressed tightly up against all those roles you've taken. They become one and the same.
And this is why Colin Farrell in Total Recall makes me reach for my hash pipe, not to add to the enjoyment of the film, but to make it go away. I'm sure he was offered a pile of cash for this ill conceived summer movie remake. He went and did Fright Night last summer and it was pretty good, but also another remake. And Miami Vice didn't seem to work either, but yet another remake, but of a television series.
Maybe I've watched In Bruges one too many times and I want something more like that. So as we all wait for that day to come or for Colin to take up boxing or do a Riverdance movie or some other ghastly project, go watch that again.
