Wake Me When It's Southland Tales
"The end is nigh!" This is what I'm reading between the lines daily in my news consumption. You don't have to agree with me (you probably will), but an end days attitude feels like a lazy, reductive conclusion to the splendor of the world. I suppose I prefer optimism as compared to well, we’re all going to die (even if it’s true).
This is how I feel about Richard Kelly's Southland Tales. I was ready for something great like Donnie Darko, but this thing is all big ideas, great concepts and many confusing plot lines. Not quite mesmerizing, but as a Marijuana Movie Night movie though...man, this thing is perfection. Put it on, smoke until you set your fire alarm off and watch this uncoil itself in front of you. Don't know what's going on? So what. You're bored? Fast forward a bit because there is a lot of to unpack here. You are going to find something you like. I highly suggest you take a break from the news and substitute this. As you watch, it will feel almost exactly the same as viewing a few hours of CNN or Fox News. Are you not entertained?
