Forever Dark Star
They're not lost in space, they're loose.
In 1968, The Grateful Dead band released a single called Dark Star. That same year, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey was released. 6 years later, Dark Star came out and it was fucking perfect. Hippies. Outer Space. The Future as a boring place. The grubby future was going look & feel the same as the grubby present. Everything the same, but with the handicaps of space travel and the ennui of life in neutral. The philosophy of punk beginning to seep into the cracks of hippy optimism. The world felt as dark and horrible as it does now. Art was eating itself to stay alive. What was coming out the other end was as unexpected as the Eraserhead baby.
This is John Carpenter first film and contains many of his signature elements to come. So enjoy the early instincts of a future auteur with hints of Jerry & Kubrick. This also contains a great story about surfing in Malibu which made me want to watch this all over again. I'm glad this story helped influence of the awesome poster art with this post.
