Moving Pictures as Movable Feasts
Full disclosure. I was obsessed with In Bruges for a very long time. I could not get enough of the crackling dialog of Martin McDonagh falling out of the talented mouths of Colin Farrell and Brenden Gleeson. This was my touchstone. It was my comfort food film when I had a bad day. If I was headed out drinking, you would find me playing the movie as video wallpaper as I got ready. I would recite dialogue as I pregamed. Some films take me back to a time & place like some kind of Proust Effect.
I don’t drink anymore, but that’s OK because legal weed is easier . Has the ethos, logos and pathos of boozing my life away gone? Likely. Do I wrote more now that I’m not curled around the toilet in hangover hell? Sure. I’ve accepted the possibility that being a bard of bar culture has sunsetted into my yesterdays. Things change by the millisecond so you either double down on what you know or push into new territory. Don’t ever get complacent because it won’t last and neither will you. Make a decision.
