Selling Drugs is Profitable
Drugs teach us things about ourselves. This is not an endorsement, but a fact. Our coffee in the morning. Our cocktail in the evening. A joint to relax. Some aspirin when our head is pounding. Drugs can help, hurt, heal, sooth, comfort or kill.
LSD was studied back in the 50s and was considered as a method to cure alcoholism. The war on drugs killed additional funding for research and those conclusions were suppressed for years. The United States has legalized cannabis in over half the states, but it is still considered a schedule 1 drug, sitting in the same category as crystal meth & fentanyl. Opioid deaths in the U.S. had been rising since 1999 with over 91 thousand Americans dying of overdoses in 2020 alone.
The drug categories for all the above mentioned substances feel random except for one throughline: who gets the profit. If you are a large pharmaceutical, you get a pass. In some places in America, it is still a felony to be in possession of cannabis. You get your ass locked up for a plant you can grow in your residence.
We are all drug users and maybe admitting our own hypocrisy will give us the clarity to see things for how they are.
