Tetris is Now a Film
I was a fan of Pong as well as Asteroids, but never got into the beautifully, hypnotic banality of Tetris. Admittedly, I did have a heavy rotation of math rock which I think is a good pairing to most video games. I blame my stilted teenage years being an influence. My mom would blame it on the drugs.
If I were to tell you that Marvel Studios had contacted me to option the story of my bonsai tree Bon Bon, I certainly hope you would call me out on my lies. Plant based films are like plant based diets. Your audience mileage will vary.
So what about the source material for this film? Well, it’s real. The game was created in Russia by a scientist. It had the same addictive and gravitational pull as some of todays apps. Got a TikTok or Instagram addiction? Maybe some sessions of Tetris can get you unstuck. It might be like indulging in cannabis to get over a nasty meth habit. I try not to judge. I’m high right now thinking about falling blocks.
