Scarlett Johansson's Career is The Perfect (Nerd) Storm
Scarlette Johnansson's movie roots are nerd movies (Ghost World is my exhibit A). She seems to fluctuate between films that give fan boys' boners, waking them from their graphic novel REM sleep, to major motion pictures. These days, these are now one and the same. Thanks Comic-Con.
However, Under the Skin is somewhere in between those two worlds, in a place where literature and ambitious storytelling come together to produce a film whose pretensions you go home with at the end of the night with, knowing that it might be a terrible idea. So why does this make such a stunningly high grade (pun always intended) in regard to MMN dedication to weed addled entertainment? The movie works on multiple levels, easily morphing from science fiction to horror to art cinema to just a weird foreign film with a huge A list actress in it. And all these elements are very well balanced...and if that doesn't do it for you, well, there are some very long nude scenes ScarJo does which leave nothing to the imagination. Mr. Skin just came reading this.
So, I'm going to go out there and say this film has something for everyone...except for the kids. Yeah, not the kids. You are going to have to see this without them around unless you were planning on gifting them a few weeks of nightmares.
